The Hershey volleyball squad finished fifth Saturday at the Lexington Invitational by defeating their rival St. Pat’s Irish in three sets in their last match of the day..
In the fifth-place match, Hershey (3-1) lost the first set 25-23 but came back strong to take the second 25-15 and finished the Irish (4-3) off with a 25-14 win in the deciding set.
The Panthers opened the day with a hard fought three-set loss to Hastings that moved them to the loser’s bracket. But they came back strong and swept Holdrege in two sets to set up their game against the Irish.
Likewise, St. Pat’s ended in the lower bracket when they were defeated by Lexington, 2-0, in their first match but took out Chase County, 2-1, to earn their spot in the fifth-place battle.
Hershey Head Coach Samantha Kennedy was happy with her team’s performance.
“Overall, we played pretty well and never let up,” she said.
St. Paul won the eight-team event beating Lexington in two straight sets.
The Panthers return home to face Cozad (0-3) Tuesday.
Kennedy said her team will be ready to play. “I just know we have to play our best game to win.”
St. Pat’s will be on the road Tuesday against Dundy County Stratton (1-4) at Benkelman.
