Arcadia-Loup City scored early and often on Wednesday and Sutherland never had a chance as the Rebels cruised to a 72-14 win over the Sailors in the second round of the state football playoffs.
Arcadia-Loup City (9-1) moves on to the quarterfinals of the Class D1 playoffs, where they will play Dundy County-Stratton (9-1) in the quarterfinals on Tuesday.
Sutherland ends their season with a 9-1 record.
The Rebels came out and put up 44 points in the first quarter. The Sailors had no answer. They didn’t score until the second quarter and it was much too late. The score at halftime was 56-14 at halftime.
With the mandatory moving clock, the second half went pretty quickly and Sutherland’s season came to an end again in the second round.
Last year, the Sailors made it to the second round before losing to eventual state runner-up Burwell.
With high expectations from that season, Sutherland edged South Loup, one of the three teams to beat them last year, in the first game. From there, the Sailors weren’t challenged until the last regular season game, when they scored two touchdowns late to beat Morrill, 28-22.
In the first round at home, Sutherland beat North Central, 32-16, before going down to Arcadia-Loup City.
