Police and sheriff’s deputies converged in the 100 block of N. Chestnut Friday afternoon to check out a reported violent situation.

At least one person was transported away by ambulance, and the entire block was taped off as officers checked out the scene.

Police did not immediately provide any details, but at 3 p.m. Sgt. Dale Matuszczak said there was no reason for the public to be concerned.

Around 3:25 p.m., Lt. Steve Reeves made a brief statement. He said police got a call at 2:32 p.m. from a man who aid he shot someone in self-defense.

They arrived to find a 25-year-old at the scene who later died, and they took a 43-year-old man into custody. Reeves did not provide any names.

A woman who lives near B and Walnut told reporters that she thought she heard six gunshots in quick succession.

Later Friday, Keith L. Allen of North Platte was arrested and charged with homicide, according to Lincoln County sheriff’s records.

Police have not confirmed that Allen’s arrest was for the same incident.
