A Valentine woman has earned a $1,000 dual excellence scholarship for her efforts both in the classroom and in the rodeo arena.

Sheyenne Hammond received the scholarship Saturday during the annual Mid-Plains Community College Rodeo Team Banquet.

The rodeo team’s booster committee, the Wranglers, awards the scholarship each year to a rodeo competitor who achieves success in schoolwork and rodeo simultaneously.

“Sheyenne has excelled in the arena with the points she’s earned, and at the same time, has maintained at least a 3.0 grade point average,” said Dustin Elliott, the rough stock coach of the community college team. “There are others who ranked a little higher in points, and some who had a higher GPA, but none had the combined success she did to qualify for the dual excellence scholarship.”

Hammond is currently fourth in the Great Plains Region in barrel racing and she is 12th in breakaway roping.

The annual banquet was held at the Holiday Inn Express in North Platte.
