Brian H. Horst 72, of North Platte, NE passed away peacefully on July 27, 2022 after a three-year battle with pancreatic cancer.

Brian was born and raised by a devoted family in Wisner, NE. After high school, he made his way to Doane College majoring in Education, and also met his wife of 50 years, Mary Lynn. Following graduation, Brian and Mary Lynn moved to North Platte, where their daughter, Laura Lynn, was born.

Brian was not only known to the North Platte community as an educator and elementary school principal, but also as an entertainer that made us all love music and theatre. He performed in over 30 musicals at the North Platte Community playhouse, sang with Four-in-a-Chord, was a member of Heartland Singers, was a soloist at numerous funerals, and sang with the First United Methodist Church Choir.

He served his community through Kiwanis, The Elks Club, Rotary, North Platte Community Concert Association, and the Mid Nebraska Community Foundation. He served his church through numerous committees, offices, and the establishment of the columbarium.

Retiring after 35 years of education and guiding North Platte youth and mentoring numerous teachers, Brian worked for Carpenters and Adams & Swanson funeral homes. His personality brought comfort and peace to many.

Brian was preceded in death by his parents, Ivan and Delores Horst, and his in-laws Irvin and Garneta Bauerle.

Brian is survived by his wife, Mary Lynn, daughter, Laura Lynn Horst, sisters, Jean (Dale) Christensen, Joyce (Larry) Raabe, Lori (David) Kohler, his in-laws Marcia Ann (Jim) Lindau, Marla Kaye (Terry) Hill, Mike (Jill) Bauerle, Bill (Marcia) Bauerle, Margaret (Jeff) Nelson, and numerous nephews and nieces.

A Celebration of Life will be held at 11 a.m. on August 1 at The First United Methodist Church with Reverend Mike Evans officiating. Memorial Book signing will be from noon to 3 p.m. on Sunday, July 31 at Carpenter Memorial Chapel.

In lieu of flowers Memorials may be sent to The First United Methodist Church, North Platte Community Playhouse, Callaghan Cancer Center, and The Lake Maloney Golf Course.
