State troopers removed 18 drivers from the road during a weekend of extra enforcement focused on drunk and drugged driving. One of the arrests was for driving under the influence of drugs.

The effort ran from April 19-21, coinciding with a national campaign organized by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

In addition to the 18 charges of DUI, state troopers also cited drivers for:

Speeding – 286

Driving under suspension – 26

Minor in possession – 5

Open alcohol container – 14

No seat belt – 9

Improper child restraint – 7.

Troopers also assisted 78 motorists in need of help during the weekend.

“Impaired driving can take multiple forms,” said Col. John Bolduc, Superintendent of the Nebraska State Patrol. “Every time you get behind the wheel, you should be sober. Driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs endangers yourself and everyone else on the road.”

“As the summer travel season approaches, now is the time to get into the safe driving mindset,” Bolduc said. “Make your mind up now that you’ll always have a plan for a sober driver after summer parties, community events, and family gatherings.”

This effort was made possible in part by a grant from the Nebraska Department of Transportation – Highway Safety Office.
