Having just seen Rep. Adrian Smith’s campaign commercial, it would be nice if he’d tell the people in his district the truth.

He complains about Biden’s border policy, but neglects to say that the Democrats put forth a comprehensive bill to address this border problem that included what the Republicans wanted, but then rejected it on the orders of Donald Trump, who didn’t want the problem to be solved, because he wanted to campaign on it, just like you’re doing.

The bill you rejected was supported by the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, the Wall Street Journal editorial board and the National Border Patrol Council.

He also wants to bring back Trump’s border policy. How soon he forgets that the courts rejected Trump’s claim that he could order the closing of the border under Section 212(f) of the Immigration and  Nationality Act (INA). Funny how that’s the same rule that Republicans say that Biden could use to close the border.

Rep. Smith claims he’ll vote to build the wall. If the wall is so important, why didn’t the Republicans fund its building when they controlled both the House and the Senate while Trump was President?

Rep. Smith complains about wasteful spending, but doesn’t say that under Trump’s our years in office, the national debt increased by $8 trillion. Hey Adrian, tell us what the American people got for their money? Oh, I remember now, corporations and wealthy got a big tax break.

So Adrian, what have you done for the voters in your district that warrants us returning you to Congress?

Mitchel Rickett, Brady, NE

Editor’s note — This provision was adopted in 2018 — Section 212(f) of the Immigration and Nationality Act (INA) states that “[w]henever the President finds that the entry of any aliens or of any class of aliens into the United States would be detrimental to the interests of the United States, he may by proclamation, and for such period as he shall deem necessary, suspend the entry of all aliens or any class of aliens as immigrants or nonimmigrants, or impose on the entry of aliens any restrictions he may deem to be appropriate.” https://www.justice.gov/opa/pr/doj-and-dhs-issue-new-asylum-rule
