The North Platte FNBO Seniors couldn’t find an answer for Grand Island on Wednesday as they were swept in a doubleheader, 17-1 and 16-7, at Bill Wood Field.

The Seniors are now 14-10 on the season.

Grand Island opened the day by scoring two runs in the top of the first inning. North Platte answered with a run in the bottom of the first.

GI then scored a run each in the next three innings, while North Platte couldn’t get anything going against pitcher Dyllan Hinrichs.

Grand Island broke it open in the fifth inning by scoring 12 runs as National starter Ty Robinson tired out and he was relieved by Gabe Moreno.

North Platte was the visiting team in the second game per Cornhusker League rules. The Nationals scored two runs in the top of the first when Dein McEntire reached base on an error by shortstop Sam Dinkelman.

GI answered back with two runs of their own in the bottom of the first.

The Nationals went back on the offensive in the top of the second. They regained the lead, 3-2, when Jack Polk drew a walk from Grayson Sack with the bases loaded. Another run scored when Easton Jones sacrificed himself with a ground ball to third base. It became 6-2 when McEntire hit a two-run single to left field.

But North Platte couldn’t hold on. Grand Island scored five runs to go back ahead as Jones, the Nationals’ starting pitcher for game two, struggled with his control.

The Nationals couldn’t score in the third inning as Sack was relieved by Gage Gannon. GI scored five runs in the bottom of the third against pitcher Caden Joneson to take control. Grand Island four more in the fourth to put it out of reach.

Next, the Seniors will host Chadron on Friday.
