Police went looking for a suspect on West Eighth on Friday afternoon, but another man gave them trouble and he got arrested instead.

Around 5:11 p.m., the North Platte police responded to a report that a wanted man was likely at a home in the 300 block of W. Eighth. Police and sheriff’s deputies went there to check it out.

Upon arrival, officers met a man coming out of the house. He was uncooperative and would not provide his name, police Sgt. Jeremiah Johnson said. An officer tried to detain him in order to identify him, but the man ran to a vehicle that was parked there. Johnson said as police tried to get him out of the vehicle, the man took aggressive action. He backed up at high speed, nearly hitting the officers. Then he pulled ahead, again almost striking an officer plus a patrol vehicle.

Then he led officers on a chase for about 16 blocks, to a house in the 600 block of N. Sheridan. When he got there, he got out and ran inside.

At some point, he was identified as Marshall Gallegos, 44.

Johnson said officers made several attempts to communicate with him to come out of the house peacefully, but he would not respond, so police obtained a search warrant.

Johnson said when Gallegos still refused to come out, officers deployed chemical agents to force him out. Still, he didn’t come out, so after a few minutes, police entered. They found him barricaded in a bedroom and broke through the barricade. Gallegos continued to resist but was ultimately subdued, according to the police report.

He was taken to jail, charged with two misdemeanors and four felonies, including an attempted assault on a police officer with a deadly weapon, the car.

In all, he is charged with obstructing police, criminal attempt assault on an officer, use of a deadly weapon to commit to a felony, resisting arrest (second offense), fleeing in a motor vehicle to avoid arrest and willful reckless driving.

Johnson said police did not find the person that they were looking for in the first place, when they went to the house.
