After an investigation of a series of thefts that started in March, North Platte police cited a woman Wednesday for “skip-scanning” items as she went through Walmart’s self-service checkout.

Walmart’s asset protection department informed police on June 8 that they discovered a series of shoplifting thefts had occurred from March 15-May 24, NPPD Sgt. Jeremiah Johnson said

The Walmart research pointed to Sonia Melissa Fojaco-Rodriguez, 25, as the suspect.

Skip scanning occurs when a customer does not scan all the items at a self-checkout, often scanning the less expensive items but not the more costly items. The thief typically puts the more expensive item into the bag and leaves the store.

In this case, Walmart reported a total loss of $666.24, Johnson said.

Criminal investigators reviewed surveillance video, receipts, and other documents.

On Tuesday, June 11, Walmart reported another theft by skip scanning by Fojaco-Rodriguez in the amount of $65.46. After an on-scene investigation that day, she was cited for shoplifting.

On Saturday, June 15, the investigation of the previous thefts was complete, and Fojaco-Rodriguez was ordered to appear in Lincoln County Court for thefts that occurred from March 15-May 24, Johnson said.
