{"id":98141,"date":"2024-05-24T19:33:14","date_gmt":"2024-05-25T00:33:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/northplattebulletin.com\/?p=98141"},"modified":"2024-06-08T23:00:04","modified_gmt":"2024-06-09T04:00:04","slug":"night-of-tornadoes-in-western-nebraska","status":"archive","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/northplattebulletin.com\/night-of-tornadoes-in-western-nebraska\/","title":{"rendered":"Archived: Night of tornadoes in western Nebraska"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The National Weather Service investigated reports of eight tornadoes that touched down on Thursday afternoon and evening at separate locations western Nebraska, including two in Lincoln County and a devastating twister on the north side of Lake McConaughy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>__________________<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Top photo<\/strong>: <em>A twister in the Elsie area, by Todd Hatcher from road 767 north of Elsie, looking southwest<\/em>, <em>sometime after 7 p.m. Thursday. <\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>__________________<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The storms were generated from a fast-moving, ferocious front that moved out of Wyoming and crossed Nebraska Thursday-Thursday night, led by strong winds, lightning and tornadic activity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Not far from North Platte, a trained spotter reported a twister two miles south of Lake Maloney just after 9 p.m., as the front hit the North Platte area. Apparently, it touched down briefly and did not cause extensive damage, an NWS meteorologist said Friday evening.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As the storm reached Lake McConaughy around 6:40 p.m. a tornado wreaked havoc on the north shore, about two miles east-southeast of Lemoyne. Fire and rescue crews said 22 buildings were destroyed, mostly outbuildings and shops. In all, 39 homes were damaged. Two campers on separate beaches of the lake were destroyed, and an undisclosed number of people were rescued from their basements. Powerlines and trees were knocked over, but fortunately, no one was injured. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There are reports that there were three tornadoes in that storm, rated as EF 0, EF 1, and EF 2, an NWS meteorologist said. Wind speeds range from 65-135 mph across those categories of tornadoes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In North Platte, winds gusted up to 30 mph throughout Thursday afternoon. When the storm hit around 9 p.m., loud lightning cracks pierced the steady rumble of thunder. Steady flashes of lightning lit the sky for nearly a hour. Administrative Assistant Johanna LaMoine looked forward to the results of the survey that the national weather service was conducting. The results are expected late Friday night or Saturday morning. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The first reported tornado in western Nebraska Thursday afternoon was at 5 p.m. south of Bingham, near the border of Sheridan and Grant counties, about 20 miles west of Hyannis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Other sightings &#8212; locations and times:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2022 5:58 p.m. &#8212; 5 miles east-southeast of Lewellen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2022 6:35 p.m. \u2013 2 miles west-southwest of Brule.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2022 6:49 p.m. \u2013 funnel cloud, 1 mile south of Ogallala.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2022 7:18 p.m. \u2013 4 miles east-northeast of Grant.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2022 7:28 p.m. \u2013 8 miles south of Paxton.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Looking ahead, the weather will be partly cloudy and breezy on Saturday in the North Platte area, with a 40% chance of rain late Saturday night, mainly before 1 a.m., the weather service said.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The National Weather Service investigated reports of eight tornadoes that touched down on Thursday afternoon and evening at separate locations western Nebraska, including two in Lincoln County and a devastating twister on the north side of Lake McConaughy. __________________ Top photo: A twister in the Elsie area, by Todd Hatcher from road 767 north of [&hellip;]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1020,"featured_media":98142,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[3],"tags":[],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v22.9 -
