A car hit the back of a semi-truck Sunday evening on U.S. Highway 83 near Wellfleet and then swerved into the ditch, the Lincoln County sheriff’s office said.
A call came into the 911 dispatch center at 6:48 p.m., reporting a non-injury accident about six miles north of the Lincoln County line on U.S. Highway 83, according to a sheriff’s spokesman.
The caller said a passenger vehicle rear-ended a semi-truck. While responding, deputies were told that the driver of the passenger vehicle was injured.
When deputies arrived, they found the driver with non-life-threatening injuries, and identified her as Stephanie Huntsman, 25, of North Platte, the sheriff’s office said.
Huntsman refused medical treatment at the scene but was taken to Great Plains Health by family members.
The semi-truck driver, Joseph Paterna, 34, of Las Vegas, NV., told deputies that Huntsman tried to pass him as they were both traveling north. Paterna said Huntsman clipped the back of his truck and then swerved into the west ditch.
While investigating, deputies discovered Ms. Huntsman’s vehicle contained drug paraphernalia, leading to suspicion that she might have been under the influence at the time of the wreck.
Huntsman was tested at the hospital while was being treated for injuries. She was not cited, although a citation could be issued when the lab results are known, the sheriff’s office said.
