Now that summer is here, Nebraska consumers are encouraged to remain savvy and avoid fraudulent hotel websites and bookings.

Travel fraud is on the rise.  According to recent research from the American Hotel and Lodging Association, one in four consumers is scammed, costing the victims more than  $5 billion annually.

When looking for a good trip at a fair price, ask yourself some key questions:

• Are the cancellations and refund policies clear?  Can you get a copy of these in writing?

• Can you pay by credit card?  Credit cards give more protection than cash or checks.

• Do you know the total price of the hotel stay per night, including any “resort fees” or other mandatory charges?

• Can you trust that review?  Look at different websites for reviews so you can evaluate comments from different sources.
