State troopers with the Carrier Enforcement Division unexpectedly inspected commercial vehicles on Wednesday, July 2, in Keith County.

NSP spokeswoman Mikayla Hall said 26 vehicle inspections were conducted by the Metropolitan Aggressive and Prevention Selective (MAPS) Team, which turned up 57 violations of federal safety regulations and state law.

Troopers took six vehicles out of service so they were not allowed to return to the road. Also, three drivers were placed out of service. Troopers also issued 15 citations during the inspections.

Vehicles are placed out of service for a variety of reasons relating to bad brakes or tires, or other problems that pose immediate safety risks, Hall said.

During the inspections, troopers also issued a total of nine CVSA decals for vehicles that were in good standing.

The effort focused on vehicles that do not cross weigh stations on their regular routes.

Troopers check for compliance with federal safety regulations and enforce laws pertaining to weight, size, registration, dyed fuels, and permits associated with commercial vehicles.

Hall said the MAPS Team is funded largely by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration. The team was implemented in 1998 and consists of troopers from the Nebraska State Patrol Carrier Enforcement Division.
