State troopers rescued a kidnapping victim and arrested an Indiana man Wednesday night near Grand Island.
NSP spokesman Cody Thomas said troopers were alerted by officers in Indiana that a suspect and victim were believed to be traveling west through Nebraska, and the driver likely had several firearms and a warrant was out for his arrest.
Troopers found the vehicle, a Chevrolet Silverado, westbound on I-80.
Thomas said the NSP SWAT team tried to stop the pickup at mile marker 314, near Grand Island around 8:20 p.m. The suspect drove through the median, turned around and headed east. Troopers immediately performed a tactical vehicle intervention, deliberately colliding with the pickup, and brought it to a stop.
The driver, William Brittingham, 52, of Demotte, Ind., was taken into custody without further trouble and the female passenger was rescued.
Thomas said the woman told troopers she was handcuffed during the drive from Indiana, and numerous firearms were found in the cab of the pickup.
Brittingham was taken to the Hall County jail to await extradition to Indiana.
Thomas said Homeland Security Investigators, the Lincoln/Lancaster County Narcotics Task Force and the Omaha Police Department helped with the operation.
