Around 5:50 p.m. MT Tuesday, Oct. 28, a trooper saw a southbound Buick sedan with no license plates and no lights activated on Neb. Highway 87 in Sheridan County. The trooper tried to pull it over.
The Buick driver initially stopped but as the trooper approached the car, the driver accelerated and drove off, heading north, NSP spokesman Cody Thomas said.
A short time later, another trooper successfully deployed stop sticks, which brought the vehicle to a stop about three miles south of the South Dakota state line. The driver and another passenger ran off on foot. Two passengers complied with the trooper’s commands and remained with the car.
The passenger was found a short time later and taken into custody. He is Tyrone Caldwell, 22, of Pine Ridge, S.D. and was in possession of a hatchet. He was charge with obstructing a peace officer and possession of a concealed weapon.
The driver was found and apprehended about a mile north of where the car stopped. Michael Jack, 37, of Pine Ridge, S.D. was charged with flight to avoid arrest, obstructing an officer, driving under the influence of alcohol, failure to obey a lawful order, no operator’s license, possession of an open alcohol container, and traffic violations.
Jack and Caldwell were taken to the Sheridan County Jail. The two passengers who stayed in the car were released.
