Daylight saving time began at 2 a.m. Sunday, March 9, as serious talk continues about doing away with the twice-a-year time change.
To stay in tune, set clocks to “spring ahead” before going to bed Saturday night. Or like most of us, reset them sometime during the next day or two.
The Nebraska Legislature is considering bills to leave clock settings the same throughout the year, either according to standard time or daylight saving time. Other states are talking about it too.
On the more regular side of the situation, the American Red Cross reminds everyone that it’s a good time to test your smoke alarms too. Working smoke alarms can cut the risk of dying in a home fire by half.
- Install smoke alarms on every level of your home, including inside and outside bedrooms and sleeping areas. Replace the batteries at least once a year.
- Replace smoke alarms that are 10 years or older. The sensor becomes less sensitive over time.
- Practice a two-minute escape plan.
- Teach children what a smoke alarm sounds like and what to do when it goes off.
