A Sutherland woman was arrested Wednesday, suspected of taking $38,000 from the American Legion Post over the last two years.
On Aug. 6, investigators with the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office received information of the possible embezzlement from the Hershey / Sutherland American Legion Post 279 fund for the Hershland baseball team.
The sheriff’s office said a forensic accountant helped with the investigation, and it became clear the organization was missing money over the last two years in excess of $38,000.
The person solely in charge of the organizations finances was identified as Sutherland resident Robin Hiatt, 54. When investigators tried to talk to her about the discrepancies, she ignored them, the sheriff said.
On Wednesday, the sheriff’s office, with help from the Keith County Sheriff’s Office, charged Hiatt with theft and took her to the Lincoln County jail.
The case remains under investigation and further charges are pending, the sheriff said Thursday morning.
