Greetings from the Capitol, where the Legislature is deep into debating the state budget and key policies as we near the session’s end. It’s been a busy week, and I want to share some of the highlights.

First, budget discussions have taken center stage. LB 261, dealing with appropriations for 2025-2027, kicked off with a lengthy debate. My philosophy, shaped by years of county board experience, is that budget transparency is crucial. We must base decisions on actual spending, not just budget requests, to ensure taxpayer dollars are used efficiently. This is particularly important  in regards to the impact our decisions here have on property taxes, a shared responsibility between state and local entities. Voters deserve representatives who prioritize fiscal responsibility.

Another key budget bill, LB 264, included fund transfers and other provisions. Notably, discussion revolved around the Perkins County Canal, a strategic water project with significant potential returns. This project demonstrates responsible fiscal management and long-term economic growth and we must defend against efforts to raid the funds dedicated to this project, vital to the future of agriculture in Nebraska.

My background has instilled a dedication to local control, fiscal responsibility and limited government and I will continue to base my budgetary decisions on those principles. There is more work to be done.

On a personal note, I’m pleased to report that two of my bills advanced on the Consent Calendar on Friday, May 9th. LB 422 addresses an insurance gap, ensuring coverage continues for 30 days after a property transfer via a transfer on death deed. LB 385 updates the Uniform Deceptive Trade Practices Act to include broadband internet access providers, reflecting the evolving digital landscape.

It’s an honor to represent District 43. Your input is invaluable, so please don’t hesitate to reach out.
