North Platte High’s Skills USA team held its second annual Cars and Crafts show Saturday at the high school. The number of craft exhibits doubled from last year and more cars were on display too.

“We’ve done really good today,” Skills USA sponsor and high school welding instructor Nathaniel Foster said as the show wound down around 4 p.m. “The parking lot was full of cars and pickups earlier, with 55 adult exhibitors and seven students.”

Foster said 20 vendors lined the sidewalk near the front entrance and inside the commons. The vendors and car exhibitors paid fees to be in the show, with proceeds going to Skills USA students to help cover the costs of traveling to competitions.

Visitors also brought canned goods, enough to fill a table and a half, for the high school food pantry. A silent auction increased revenue too.

Two of the exhibitors, Emma Moon and Patty Young of Maxwell, said they had a good day for sales.

The mother-daughter make wind chimes, yard ornaments, decorations and other creations, repurposing such things as old wheels, yard tools, engine parts, chains, tool boxes and other garage sale items.

They said no two creations are alike. They do it for the love of creating, to meet people and to make some extra money.

The winning car in the People’s Choice awards was a 1969 Plymouth Satellite, shown by Randy Roethemeyer. Paula Smith was second with her 1979 Ford F-100 pickup, and Dan Troyer’s 1945 Chevy Cabover truck was third.

On the high school level, Dale Zogg took first with a 1977 AMC Gremlin. Khalon Newtson was second with a 1948 International pickup.
