Refugio “Roy” “Cuco” Vieyra, 89, passed away in the hands of his children from a brief battle with cancer on March 8, 2023.

Roy was born July 4, 1933, to Manuel R. and Mary (Ybarra) Vieyra in Wellington, Kan. Early years of his life were shared between Wellington and Roscoe, Hershey and North Platte.

On June 2, 1951, Roy married Anita “Annie” Rivera. From this union came Santiago “Jimmy”, Steven, Phyllis, Tommy, Roy and Cabrina. After divorcing, Roy married Marcy Duarte and later Roberta Jones.

Roy worked for Joe Dye Ford before entering military service. He served in the Army 1956-1958, then following military duty, he dedicated 43 years to TRW/American Suzuki in Ogallala. Upon retiring from there he dedicated another 17 years to Regency Retirement Home, until fully retiring at age 85.

Roy was an original member of North Platte Mac’s (Mexican Athletic Club). He was a very exceptional athlete in baseball, softball, basketball and bowling. He loved and enjoyed playing with his sons, cousins and uncles. One of his many achievements included being on the only sports team to play fast-pitch softball double headers at the Nebraska State Penitentiary.

He is remembered by his children, Steven of Lincoln and Tommy (Alice), Roy and Cabrina (Eric Hansen) of North Platte; mother of his children, Annie Vieyra of North Platte; uncles, Jesse Ybarra (91) and Paul Ybarra (98); brothers, George, Pat (Chris) and Bobby (Mary) of North Platte, Michael (Angie) of Kearney and Tino (Anna) of Grand Island; sisters, Neille (Leonard Tominaga) of Downey, Calif., Lola (Jesse Lira) of North Platte, Terry (Don Boese) of Overland Park, Kan., and Helen Sanchez, Anita Sanchez and Gina (Ruben Rangel) of North Platte; and many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews and other family.

Roy was preceded in death by his grandparents; parents, Manuel and Mary; ex-wives, Marcy and Roberta; sisters, Jennie and Irene; son, Jimmy; and daughter, Phyllis.

Services are 10 a.m., Monday, March 20 at Odean Colonial Chapel, which is in charge of arrangements. Fr. Joe Kadaprayil will officiate. Inurnment with military honors will follow in Fort McPherson National Cemetery. The memorial book may be signed prior to services at Odean Colonial Chapel.
