Dennis (Denny) Whitmore was awarded a Quilt of Valor on Saturday, Sept. 12 by the Heartland Nebraska Quilts of Valor chapter in North Platte.
Dennis was drafted into the United States Army in 1967. He was stationed in Korea as an Army Power Generation Equipment Operator and Mechanic and worked at the 121st Evacuation Hospital not only as a mechanic but also as a driving trainer and guard.
Denny indicated his service to his country was fulfilling and rewarding despite being in a war-torn land.
Whitmore’s quilt is the 18th Quilt of Valor to be awarded by Heartland Nebraska Quilts of Valor, according to Chris Reinert of North Platte, the organization’s representative.
The group, which is a part of the national Quilts of Valor Foundation, was organized in January 2019 and awarded its first Quilt of Valor in May 2019.
The quilts are pieced and quilted by local volunteers as a way of showing appreciation to those veterans who have been touched by war. Whitmore’s quilt was pieced by Katie Naylor and quilted by Sharlene Rodewald.
