The North Platte Planning Commission held three public hearings Monday to discuss key issues, including a proposal to convert the Ramada into apartments.

The commission also considered a blight and substandard study to redevelop a business on Rodeo Road, as well as a potential change to a city zone where sexually oriented businesses are permitted.

North Platte Hospitality Inc. of San Ramon, Calif. applied for a conditional use permit to convert the Ramada by Wyndham motel at 2102 S. Jeffers St. into apartments. Located in a B-2 Highway Commercial District, the building would be repurposed to address what commission documents call “an urgent community need for housing,” while lowering redevelopment costs and shortening the time it woud normally take to construct more housing.

The company said the change would not increase traffic and might even reduce it, compared to the current use of the motel. The project is expected to deliver housing within 6-9 months, offering several all-inclusive units.
