Old-time harvesting and farming methods will be on display in a good old-fashioned farm show on Sunday, Aug. 9 four miles south of Indianola.

That is the date of the 12th annual Bum Malleck Memorial Threshing, held in conjunction with the annual Indianola Old Settlers Celebration.

The Bum Malleck show is more than a threshing. This year’s events will include a sawmill in action, shingle making, corn shelling with mule power, stationary baling, a horse-powered grain elevator, a wagon hoist as well as other early 1900s farm machines.

“We think our show is somewhat unique in that we don’t just display the equipment,” said Bum Malleck’s son, Griff, the chairman of the annual event. “We have live demonstrations of most of the machines, and they actually do work.”

“In addition to several teams of horses and mules working in harness, we will have a large display of working antique tractors, approximately 50 stationary engines, and at least one steam-powered tractor all belted to various pieces of machinery,” he said.

Last year’s show was cancelled due to an accident just weeks before the event. Hundreds of spectators have enjoyed prior shows and the demonstrations, including perhaps the largest collection of 1920s era Rumley oil pull tractors in Nebraska.

Tractors on display include the largest Rumley tractor ever made, with wheels nearly 7 feet high.  This year’s demonstrations include an original wooden threshing machine that has been stored inside for decades, plus a broom maker that makes brooms out of straw.  The organizers try to add at least one new feature each year. This year, they will demonstrate 2 horse/mule-drawn big round bale movers, as well as a mule-drawn loose hay loader.

This year’s event will again feature self-guided tours of the refurbished 100-year-old horse and mule barn and a one-room school house complete with original desks.

The event is open to the public with no admission charge. Show prep begins Saturday and the show begins at noon on Sunday, Aug. 9. There will be food and shade on site.

This year’s show is sponsored by Red Willow Chemical & Fertilizer and the Janssen Auto Group.  For more information, call (308)340-1294 or (308)340-6232.
