North Platte High School’s Advanced Acting class will present their children’s show, Shelly’s Flipped Fairytales to the public at 7 p.m. on Friday, March 6.
Written by the students of the class, the twist on fractured fairytales is sure to have you giggling with your kids, Director Brittany McDaniel said.
Shelly’s Flipped Fairytales is funded through a REACH grant with the North Platte Public Schools Foundation and Fat Dogs. The play is traveling to all of the district elementary schools during the last week of February and first week of March.
A free public performance for the community will end the tour at 7 p.m. on March 6 in the North Platte High School Performing Arts Center.
Over the course of the past two months, students have written, revised, cast, built, and rehearsed this silly show about a group of “fourth grade students” coming together to put on a production for their school.
When the boys decide to go rogue and the girls aren’t having it, some pretty ridiculous hilarity ensues.
Senior Pluto Axthelm said the show has been super fun to write and produce.
“It was really fun to think back to what we were like as kids while writing these characters,” he said.
The class of 22 students have come with all levels of experience. A newcomer, junior Joselyn Torske said, “Preparing for this show has been nothing short of amazing. As someone who has never stepped on a stage, this has been one of my favorite experiences. All of the actors I’m alongside are all so, so incredible. The purpose behind all of this — the smile on the kids’ faces — is something we all look forward to. The theater community in general is one of a kind.”
McDaniel said the traveling show is part of a four-year tradition.
“The Reach Grant through the Foundation has helped make this possible and we love that area students look forward to seeing us every year. It’s a chaotic few weeks, but it is always more than worth it,” she said.
Admission is a free-will donation at the door. Wooden flowers will be sold for the department’s spring fundraiser before and after the performances.
