A school board candidate forum will be held 5:30 p.m. on Thursday, April 16, at North Platte Community College theater, hosted by the teachers’ union.

Ward 3 candidates Emily Garrick, Jenny Louis and Kyle Nichols will take questions from moderator Tristen Winder of KNOP-TV.

Also, another candidate forum is taking shape for Monday, April 27 at the Farmhouse, 3102 E. State Farm Road. At that forum, candidates for the contested races in wards 3 and 4 on the North Platte city council will also participate.

As the May 12 primary election is approaching, it matters who makes decisions for schools and students.

In the North Platte Public Schools, six elected school board members have a responsibility for shaping and monitoring education policies, deciding the direction of the district, and how funds will be spent.

School board members serve a term of four years, meaning that they will be making decisions through to 2030. In the primary election, two candidates will be selected to move forward to the general election.

At the general election, one person will be elected.

Kenzie Mollring, the president of the North Platte Education Association (teachers union) said, the NPEA “encourages the public to attend this candidate forum to learn more about the candidates for the school board.”
