A North Platte man is charged with first-degree assault after he allegedly assaulted several people on Memorial Day.

Deputy Police Chief Kendall Allison said officers went to a home in the 500 block of N. Walnut to check out a reported disturbance around 11:14 p.m. on May 26.

The investigators were told that a single suspect assaulted several people at the home. The victims had left the residence by then, but soon police were notified that victims were taken to Great Plains Health.

They spoke to two victims at the hospital, both of whom declined to press charges, Allison said.

A third victim came forward on May 30 and said he had been choked to unconsciousness during the disturbance. Evidence pointed to Andrew L Powell. 35, as the suspect.

Police contacted Powell and arrested him at 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday, June 3.

Powell was taken to jail, charged with first-degree assault, a class II felony punishable by up to 50 years imprisonment. A first-degree assault charge is pressed if a suspect intentionally or knowingly causes serious bodily injury to another person. “Serious bodily injury” refers to injuries that pose a substantial risk of lasting injury or death.

Powell is also charged with strangulation, a class IIIA felony punishable by up to three years in jail.

He is initially held without bond pending an arraignment in Lincoln County court, according to sheriff’s records.
