North Platte attorneys Audrey A. Kingston and Kortnei N. Smith have been nominated to become a county judge in the 11th Judicial District, which consists of 17 counties in west-central Nebraska.
A vacancy was created with the retirement of Edward D. Steenburg on Feb. 28. Steenburg was primarily located in Keith County. He served on the bench for 20 years.
Kingston is a general practice attorney currently with the law firm of Brouillette, Troshynski, Kingston, & Jackson.
Smith is a deputy Lincoln County attorney.
The Judicial Nominating Commission made the two nominations after considering three candidates Tuesday morning. Garrett Goodwin of Lexington was the other candidate.
Chief Justice Jeffrey Funke presided over the nominating commission hearing.
The 11th Judicial District consists of Arthur, Chase, Dawson, Dundy, Frontier, Furnas, Gosper, Hayes, Hitchcock, Hooker, Keith, Lincoln, Logan, McPherson, Perkins, Red Willow, and Thomas counties.

District judge applications
Also, the judicial nominating commission considered three candidates Monday to fill a vacancy in district judge in the 11th Judicial District. The commission met at the Dawson County Courthouse in Lexington.
James C. Bocott of North Platte; Shane M. Cochran of Kearney; and Terry L. VanEaton of Lexington submitted applications. The vacancy is due to Judge Matthew D. Neher’s resignation.
