A man who was afoot was hit by a semi-truck on I-80 Thursday near North Platte’s Newberry Road access. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The man was from Kentucky. He apparently stepped in front of the eastbound truck to commit suicide, a sheriff’s spokesman said Friday. His  name will not be released.

The semi-truck driver told investigators that the man stepped into the truck’s path and it was impossible to avoid the collision.

However, a family member of the victim contacted the Bulletin on Nov. 7 and said the man pulled over to check directions, then got out of his car to check on something on the vehicle when he was hit.

The collision occurred at 3:15 p.m. just west of the Newberry overpass. Traffic was diverted to the off ramp and then back to the on ramp for about two hours.

The man was dead when deputies and Nebraska State Troopers arrived, according to a sheriff’s statement.

Accident reconstructionists from the sheriff’s office and Nebraska State Patrol are investigating, the sheriff’s office said.
