The North Platte FNBO Juniors scored 10 runs in the third inning on Sunday to break open their game against Kearney, winning 15-2 in Scottsbluff to move into the district final.
“It was nice to see,” Juniors coach Ryan Jones. “Obviously, they were not a team we had a lot of success with, going 0-3, so it was the right time to beat them. Not only did we hit the ball well but Jack Polk threw well. Kaden Thompson and Caden Joneson also tracked down some balls in the outfield for us.”
North Platte (24-14) went up right away, scoring two runs in the first inning.
Kearney (25-19) answered with a run in the bottom of the first. But in the third inning, the Nationals erupted to go up 12-1.
“We put the ball in play a lot and we had some aggressive baserunning,” Jones said. “We scored three runs just with that and Rayce Moerke did an outstanding job hitting the ball.”
If that wasn’t enough, North Platte scored two more in the fourth and another in the fifth.
Jack Polk finished Kearney off in the bottom of the fifth to end the game early due to the run rule.
Cooper Hill had two hits and drove in two runs for the Nationals. Ty Robinson and Easton Jones also batted in two runs, as well.
On the mound, Polk struck out four and scattered five hits in getting the complete game victory.
Next, North Platte will take on Hastings (33-6), needing to beat them twice on Monday to win the district title.
“We have enough pitching to do it,” Jones said. “A lot of teams are scared of Hastings but these North Platte boys aren’t going to be. We’ve already beat them once.”
