Jon R. Petersen, 58, formerly of North Platte, passed away Tuesday, July 2, 2019 in Omaha.

Jon was born Nov. 1, 1960 in Sioux Falls, S.D. to Robert L. and Arleen J. (Larson) Petersen. He moved to North Platte as a young child and graduated from North Platte High School with the Class of 1979 and later from Mid Plains Community College where he received his auto body technology certificate.

Jon then joined the United States Army and served from 1981-1984. He was honorably discharged as a disabled veteran in 1984 due to a debilitating injury sustained in 1983. Jon enrolled at St. Louis University where he earned his Bachelor’s Degree in social work.

Jon had many joys in his life including painting, music, drawing and playing guitar. In his younger years, Jon was a member of North Platte Freedom Train Singers which inspired his lifelong love of all types of music. Jon will be missed greatly by his family and friends.

Survivors include his parents, Robert and Arleen Petersen of North Platte; brothers, Marc of North Platte and Todd (Diana) of Kansas City, Mo.; and his beloved nieces and nephew.

Family will be receiving friends on Sunday, July 7 from 5-7 p.m. at Carpenter Memorial Chapel, which is in care of arrangements. Services will be on Monday, July 8 at 10:30 a.m. at First Evangelical Lutheran Church. Burial will be at Ft. McPherson National Cemetery with military honors.
