Gregory Vargas, 71, of North Platte died at Great Plains Health on Monday, Sept. 28, 2020.
Greg was born in Council Bluffs, Iowa to Mildred and Fulgencio Vargas on Feb. 16, 1949. He grew up in Council Bluffs and after graduating high school enlisted in the US Air Force in 1967. Greg served in Vietnam then was assigned to Offutt Air Force Base in Omaha.
Following his honorable discharge in ‘71, Greg moved to North Platte where he began working as a meter reader for the gas company then hired on with the Union Pacific Railroad. He worked as a switchman then conductor until retiring.
On Oct. 9, 1993, Greg married Kimberly Cortez in North Platte and they were together for over 10 years when she died.
Greg was baptized in the Catholic Church and was a member of Eagle Aeries #2839. He liked being with his family and enjoyed mowing his yard.
Survivors include his daughters, Nicole (Deon) Jackson and Michelle Vargas, both of North Platte; grandchildren, Zack Vargas, Derek (Delaney) Vargas, Cayden Jackson, and Chantel Vargas; great-granddaughter, Ellie; sisters, Pamela Proctor of Council Bluffs and Mercedes “Mercy” Dschaak of Omaha; brother, Frank Vargas of Las Vegas; and other family.
Along with his wife, Kim, he was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Gary Vargas; and sister, Stephanie Vargas.
Memorial service with military honors will be held at 10:30 a.m., Friday, Oct. 16 at Odean Colonial Chapel, which is in charge of arrangements.
