Millard West scored 24 unanswered points in the second half on Friday as they defeated North Platte High 31-7 at Bauer Field.

NPHS (2-3) got the ball to start the game and pushed downfield with Owen Shea running up the middle, mixed with outside runs by Conner Stiffler and Brecken Korkow. Eight minutes into the game, the Bulldogs took the lead when Shea ran it in from three yards out.

When Millard West (3-2) got the ball, they marched down the field and tied the game when quarterback Colton Williams rolled to his left and found Parker Urbanski in the back of the end zone a minute into the second quarter.

The Wildcats held North Platte to an three-and-out and got good field position at the Bulldog 47 after K.J. Fox’s punt return. But the NPHS defense promptly stopped them.

Neither team scored again the rest of the first half and the game was still tied at 7-7 at halftime.

Both teams went scoreless for most of the third quarter, but Millard West took the lead with four minutes left when Williams found Zaylen Rachow over the middle on a slant pass for a 24-yard touchdown.

Disaster struck for the Bulldogs on their next possession. They fumbled the ball and Blake Kozney recovered and ran it in for a touchdown, making it 21-7. From there, the Millard made big plays to increase their margin.

With a little less than nine minutes left in the game, Quincy Stalets kicked a 44-yard field goal to give the Wildcats a 24-7 lead.

Two minutes later, Millard West added another touchdown for good measure as Williams threw to Rachow for a 34-yard score.

During the game, the 2001 state runner-up NPHS team was honored on the field. The former Bulldogs had their own seating section and there was a ceremony recognizing them at halftime.

Next, North Platte will play at Norfolk (1-4) on Friday, Oct. 2.
