Shortly after midnight Tuesday, Nebraska state troopers saw a southbound, orange Kawasaki motorcycle going 80 mph in a 50 mph zone on S. Locust in Grand Island.

The biker ignored an attempt to pull him over, and a chase got underway, with speeds reaching more than 100 mph, NSP spokesman Cody Thomas said.

The motorcycle made multiple turns and eventually traveled north on U.S. Highway 281. Moments later, the motorcycle hit another vehicle at the intersection of Highway 281 and West Old Potash Highway.

Thomas said the chase lasted approximately five minutes.

The motorcycle rider, a 27 year-old man, was taken to St. Francis Hospital in Grand Island where he was pronounced dead. The driver of the other vehicle, a Volkswagen Passat, was not injured, Thomas said.

The NSP has asked the Grand Island police to conduct an objective investigation.
