David Abe Falkena, 67, returned into the arms of his maker on Sept. 9, 2024.
Born in Hawarden, Iowa to Barbara and Evert (Woody) Falkena, Dave was involved in all aspects of the arts, from stage presentations to musicals. An accomplished musician vocally and instrumentally, he was especially talented playing the trombone where he played in Middle and High School as well as subsequent community bands.
Upon graduating high school, he attended Judson College in Elgin, Ill., before he joined the United States Air Force where he met the love of his life, Ailyn. Following his tour, Dave and Ailyn married and he began an amazing career in the United States Postal Service from which he retired.
An enthusiastic athlete and philanthropist, his devotion to his local communities was apparent to all through his volunteer work in youth programs, where he coached multiple youth sports teams. Most especially evident when he was able to take one youth team to the United Kingdom for enrichment.
Although Dave succumbed in the battle against Dementia, he always knew he was loved and cared for by those closest to him. His love and compassion is still felt by everyone who knew him.
Dave is preceded in death by his younger brother, Kenny.
He is survived by his parents, his brothers Jerry, Terry, his sister Cheryl, his devoted wife Ailyn, his children Christian, Shelly, Charles, Schuyler, and his grandchildren, Haley, Natalie, Ben, Phelan, Tala, Lennon, Hendrik, and Van as well as all of his beloved nieces and nephews.
Graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. on Oct. 12 at Floral Lawns Garden. A Celebration of Life will be held directly after at the First Baptist Church Fellowship Hall. Carpenter Memorial Chapel is entrusted with the arrangements.
