Evan Caudy won the Greater Nebraska Athletic Conference cross country meet Wednesday.
The North Platte High sophomore had a time of 16:22.93 to beat Jaydon Welsh of Hastings by half a second. Coming in behind Welsh at 17:03.90 was Caudy’s teammate Joel Bradley.
With the first and third place finished by Caudy and Bradley, the North Platte boys finished second to Columbus by one point.
“It was a heartbreaker for the boys to lose by one point, but shoutout to Columbus for running the best race they’d run this year,” NPHS coach Jake Hasenauer said. “We had beat them the past two meets and it’s always hard to beat a team three times in a row, so hats off to them for doing well.”
Tayler Kleinow finished eighth to bolster the Bulldogs’ score, as did Tom Moss, who was 14th.
Blaesi leads Lady Bulldogs
Zarah Blaesi finished third to lead the North Platte girls to a sixth place finish.
Blaesi’s time was 19:59.81. Chelsey Espinoza, who helped Hastings win the meet, got first place at 19:09.61. Scottsbluff’s Brooke Holzworth was second at 19:39.90.
“I’m very proud of both sides and I’m especially proud of Zarah Blaesi breaking the 20 minute barrier,” Hasenauer said. “If my statistics are correct, she’s the first North Platte girl to break 20 minutes since high school switched to racing a 5K instead of a 4K a decade ago.”
The second North Platte runner to cross the finish line was Baylee Evarts, who finished 19th.
Next, the Bulldogs will compete in districts on Oct. 17 at Papillion-LaVista. In addition to the host team, they will compete against Lincoln High, Lincoln Southwest, Lincoln Southeast, Norfolk, Omaha Benson, Omaha Northwest and Omaha South.
