Pursuant to city ordinances, every owner of any tree above any street or right-of-way within the city shall prune the branches so that overhanging branches are 16 feet above the surface of the street and eight feet above the sidewalk.
On Tuesday, Dec. 2, the North Platte Public Service Department began putting pink ribbons on trees that are not in compliance. City workers intend to begin pruning those trees on or after Jan. 5 and continue throughout the year, officials said.
City Administrator Layne Groseth said the city started on the project last spring, but concrete jobs kept workers busy for most of the summer. Now that it’s getting too cold to run concrete, tree trimming will begin again.
If you have a tree that is non-compliant and would prefer to bring it into compliance on your own, contact Street Department Supervisor Tom Tobiasson at (308) 535-6700, ext. 2419.
The city will do basic trims to get the branches to the allowable height at no charge to property owners, Groseth said.
Questions/inquiries regarding the tree ordinance may be directed to the city Public Service Department, 1402 N. Jeffers or by calling 308- 535-6700.
The written city ordinance is Title IX, Trees, Chapter 96.

City needs to look at their own trees (E. Burlington) first. Surely, we have higher priorities than trimming trees. Our infrastructure is crumbling beneath our feet and trees take priority. J. Sterling Morton would be spinning in his grave if he saw what the City wanted to do to trees.
I’ve seen trees obscuring street signs and views of cross streets at intersections. Every now and then a tree needs haircut too.
