Lincoln Southwest had too much size and length for the North Platte High School girls to contend with Tuesday, and the Silverhawks picked up a 60-38 win at the Dawg House.

“Obviously, that was their big advantage, their size and strength. They’ve got three girls who are six-foot and over,” NPHS coach Tyson Hammond said. “That’s not just the size, they’re good players.”

The game began with Raegan Wells getting a three-point play for Southwest (2-1). Jaden Ferguson then scored inside, before making a free throw on the next possession after she was fouled under the basket by Abby Orr.

After that, North Platte (1-1) started to get going with Peyton Negley and Gracie Haneborg coming alive. They were able to keep the Silverhawks from getting further ahead and the score was 15-10 at the end of the first quarter.

“We didn’t do a great job of fighting for spots but three minutes in, we figured it out and we fought pretty hard,” Hammond said.

Momentum swung toward both teams in the second. Southwest led by as much as nine and NPHS was as close as three and it was 28-22 at halftime.

Coming out of the break, Ferguson hit a runner in the lane and then Emerson Barada knocked down a jump shot from 18 feet to make it a double digit lead.

But the Silverhawks weren’t done. Ferguson scored again inside and then she drove in for a layup on the right side after initially considering pulling up for a three to make it 36-22.

The Lady Bulldogs didn’t score their first points of the second half until Kamryn Hughes’ basket with 3:26 left in the third.

But they couldn’t contain the momentum Southwest built up and the lead kept getting bigger as the game went along.

“I think they came out in the third quarter and their coach got on them about having good possessions,” Hammond said. “I think in the first half, we made them keep the ball moving and made them settle for jump shots, which is what we wanted because we didn’t want them to get the ball in the post. They did a good job in the third quarter of making sure they got those touches.”

Next, North Platte will host Lincoln Northeast (1-1) on Friday.
