The North Platte St. Pat’s Lady Irish flipped the switch late in the first half on Saturday and they left Southwest in the dust on their way to a 67-18 win at home.
As lopsided as the final score was, St. Pat’s (15-0) appeared to be going through the motions for much of the first half.
The Irish scored the first five points of the game as Kaleigh Kummer got a layup seconds after the opening tip and Hayley Homan made a three-pointer.
But Southwest showed they weren’t intimidated despite coming in with only one win as Jadyn Brooks and Cierra Clements scored baskets for the Roughriders (1-11).
St. Pat’s led 10-4 at the end of the first quarter. But the Roughriders still hung around as they pulled to 13-9 after a three by Johanna Sughroue.
The Lady Irish slowly started to wake up. Homan scored the next two baskets before Rachel Heiss made a jump shot just inside the three-point arc to make it a double-digit lead with 1:32 left in the first half.
Just 18 seconds later, Jocylin Sellers put in her own miss. Then Heiss got a three-point play as she was knocked down by Nicole Dewey after hitting an 18-foot jumper along the baseline on the left side.
The half ended with Kummer drilling consecutive treys and St. Pat’s had the game under control at halftime with a 30-9 lead.
The Irish put Southwest away to win their final game before the SPVA tournament.
As the top seed, St. Pat’s has a first round bye and they will next play the winner of Kimball and Chase County on Friday in the semifinals at North Platte Community College.
