North Platte St. Pat’s led from start to finish to defeat Perkins County, 64-35, on Friday at the McGahan Activites Center.

“We got a lot of easy buckets,” St. Pat’s coach Nathan Stienike said. “It’s good to have Mae Siegel back at 100%. She was getting out in transition and getting layups. I thought we were really aggressive. We played really sound, made the extra pass and we got a lot of open shots.”

The Lady Irish (7-4) began the game with a 6-0 run as Tonja Heirigs, Kate Stienike and Mae Siegel scored baskets.

The Irish continued to lead 19-10 at the end of the first quarter. Siegel began the second with a layup off the inbound pass from Stienike. Siegel then scored the next two buckets to make it 25-10.

Stienike said his team did a good job of adjusting on the fly in the first half. They went in expecting a box-and-one defense to stop Heirigs but instead Perkins County (6-4) played man-to-man defense to try and limit Heirigs’ support.

“We had a pretty good start, we were expecting a junk defense because that’s what they did last year, but they came out and played man,” Stienike said. “We made some nice back cuts and got some easy layups.”

The score was 35-18 at halftime and the second half began with baskets by Heirigs and Siegel. Then Stienike followed with a three-pointer to make it 42-18.

The 24-point deficit was too much for the Lady Plainsmen to come back for in the second half and St. Pat’s was able to empty their bench in the fourth quarter.

Next, the Irish will host Cozad (3-8) on Saturday.
