The North Platte St. Pat’s Lady Irish had big runs to open the first and second quarters Tuesday as they distanced themselves from Mullen in a 48-28 win at the McGahan Activites Center.
The Irish, who are still undefeated at 13-0, won the opening tip and Hayley Homan raced down the left side of the court for a layup to open scoring. Calli Groseth made a pair of free throws before Kaleigh Kummer made a three-pointer from downtown. Then it became 10-0 when Gracie Rippen hit a three off an inbound pass from the baseline by Kummer.
“We caused some turnovers,” St. Pat’s coach Nathan Stienike said. “They ran the floor well and rebounded well. When we rebound and run, we’re tough to beat.”
Mullen (9-2) outscored St. Pat’s the rest of the first quarter and it was 14-6 after the first eight minutes. But the Lady Irish rallied again, scoring the first 14 points of the second quarter to go up by 22 after threes by Groseth and Abbi Allberry. The Broncos didn’t score their first points until Haley Jones made a free throw with 53 seconds left in the half. Kinsey Skillstad made two free throws for St. Pat’s after that and it was 30-7 at halftime.
“I thought we got off to a good start,” Stienike said. “We played a good first half, holding a talented Mullen team to seven points. That’s a credit to our girls and how hard they work defensively.”
The Lady Broncos showed some fight in the third quarter as they tripled their point total and they threatened to make a game of it, down just 36-22 at the end of the third.
But Kummer knocked down another three and Homan put in a missed three from the left corner by Allberry to start the fourth. That was all that was needed to end any hopes of a Mullen comeback.
“I thought we let up there in the second half,” Stienike said. “(Samantha) Moore kind of got hot and they made it a little closer. But it was nice we got out of there with a win.”
