North Platte scored 27 unanswered points on Friday to bury Lexington in a 55-32 win at home.

Clancy Brown scored the first four points of the game for NPHS (5-5) on a pair of free throws and a basket. Then Ellie Blakely made a jump shot with a foot on the three-point line to make it 6-0.

Lexington (2-10) fought their way back in it and the Minutemaids trailed 12-11 after Sarah Treffer finished the first quarter with a pair of free throws.

“I thought we got out to a good start but (Lexington) did what they’ve been doing to everybody all year,” North Platte coach Tyson Hammond said. “They play very hard and they’re well-coached. They do things well on the floor and they keep games close. I don’t know how many people know but 22, the Treffer girl, is a very good player. She scores and finds ways to get fouled. I thought we played well in the first quarter but they stuck with us.”

But in the second quarter, the Lady Bulldogs established their dominance. They took an 18-13 lead after baskets by Macie Freeze and Carly Purdy. It became 19-13 after Freeze made one of two free throws. North Platte got the offensive rebound on her missed second free throw and Freeze earned another trip to the line. The sophomore again made the first and missed the second, which also resulted in an offensive rebound. That led to Sedina Hayes making a three-pointer from the right side to make it a 10-point game.

NPHS shut out Lexington the rest of the half and they had a commanding 37-13 lead at halftime. The run continued in the second half with baskets by Purdy and Brown. The Minutemaids finally ended their drought when Treffer got a layup right afterward. But the deficit was far too much for Lexington to overcome and the Lady Dawgs got the win.

“I thought we played a good second quarter, defensively,” Hammond said. “Clancy got in some foul trouble and had to go to the bench for most of the quarter. We did a really good job of stepping in and playing hard. Ellie and Macie created pressure and I thought Kylie (Harvey), Sedina and Carly did a good job of communicating, rebounding and getting steals that allowed us to get in transition.”

Next, North Platte will play at Sidney (12-2) on Saturday.
