The Kearney County Sheriff’s Office was called to a devastating scene early Saturday afternoon, Feb. 28 and found three children and an adult woman with apparent gunshot wounds. 

The woman was dead, Nebraska State Patrol spokesman Cody Thomas said.

The children were taken by ambulance to Good Samaritan Hospital in Kearney and treated for injuries. Two of them were later transported to Children’s Hospital in Omaha. All three are expected to survive.

Thomas said the children are all under the age of 12. 

The Nebraska State Patrol Investigative Services Division, with assistance from the Kearney County Sheriff’s Office and Kearney County Attorney’s Office, is conducting a death investigation in rural Kearney County.

The investigation is continuing and law enforcement is confident there is no ongoing threat to the public. Names were not released to protect the identities of the children.
