Another 2-4 inches of snow is possible Thursday, mainly before 3 p.m., after about 4  inches of wet heavy snow overnight, the National Weather Service in North Platte said.

The strong northerly wind will diminish after midnight, but could still gust up to 30 mph. The overnight low will be about 20 degrees with wind gusts up to 35 mph, the weather service said.

Westbound I-80 was closed around 6 p.m. Wednesday at North Platte so motorists were forced to stop for the night before the storm intensified. The road remained closed Thursday at Lexington in both directions.

The storm began in North Platte with light rain Wednesday afternoon and a strong blast of icy snow about 6:25 p.m. Although heavy snow fell occasionally in short bursts, most of the overnight snow was light. The foot of snow that was forecast across Nebraska failed to develop.

On Friday night, the temperature will drop into the teens. Northerly winds will diminish Friday and stop overnight.

Saturday will be sunny with a high around 45 degrees — the start of a slow warm-up.
