An Emerald Queen maple tree will be planted Friday near Our Redeemer Church in honor of Darlene Schick, one of the first North Platte Tree Board members.

Schick recently passed away.

The ceremony will be held at 5:30 p.m. May 18 at the corner of Burlington and McCabe. Boy Scout Troop 293 will present the flag and a city official will read a proclamation.  Mona Anderson of Keep North Platte and Lincoln County Beautiful will speak on behalf of the family, along with Schick’s former neighbor, Joni Grandel.

The public is invited to attend.

Schick was a lifelong member of Our Redeemer Church, and the tree will help shade the northeast corner of the church property. The tree will be donated by fellow church members Marvin and Patsy Bartels.

Darlene Schick’s passion for trees in the urban landscape, and her diligence in helping to invigorate the North Platte Tree Board, lead the Board to earn the Tree City USA award 35 years ago.

North Platte has continued to earn the distinction every year since, Tree Board member Tia McGuire said.
