A semi-driver was arrested Tuesday and more than 500 pounds of marijuana was found in his refrigerated trailer, following a traffic stop on I-80 near the Shelton exit.

The estimated street value of the marijuana is $1.6 million, Nebraska State Patrol spokesman Cody Thomas said.

The stop occurred at approximately 12:30 p.m., Thomas said. A trooper saw an eastbound blue Freightliner with a refrigerated trailer driving on the shoulder at mile marker 290, a mile west of the Shelton exit.

Thomas said the trooper became suspicious of criminal activity and searched the trailer. He found 18 boxes containing several hundred heat sealed bags of marijuana, weighing a total of 530 pounds.

The driver, Vladimir Javier, 51, of Homestead, Florida, was charged with possession of more than a pound of marijuana, possession with intent to deliver, and no Drug Tax stamp. Javier was taken to the Buffalo County jail.
