The Bulletin reported in April that plans were underway to build a new McDonald’s restaurant at Dewey and Francis, and now it is happening.

Long John Silver’s has been slowly winding down operations in the last few weeks, and this week, the Long John Silver’s and Taco Bell building was lifted onto a moving platform and rolled out of the way.

The North Platte city council agreed April 18 to vacate a street nearby – a dead-end, gravel street that is about a quarter-block long and borders the property on the east. That  clears the area for new construction.

Wilkinson Development of North Platte is the property owner. Star House Moving of Grant loaded up the modular fast food building.

The new McDonald’s will be built right on the corner of Francis and Dewey and the existing McDonald’s will remain open while the new one is built, according to preliminary plans.

After the council acted in April, City Administrator Jim Hawks said the city would retain its easement for utility lines there, but the stub street served no real purpose and was unlikely to ever be extended south across what are now Wal-Mart owned parking lots.

An excavator dug out the cement footing that supported the former Taco Bell-Long John Silver’s sign that stood along Dewey.
