Mona Anderson, center, accepts the Great American Cleanup Award from Keep Nebraska Beautiful Board Vice-Chair Trish Owen and Keep America Beautiful CEO Helen Lowman.

Keep North Platte and Lincoln County Beautiful received an award late last week for cleanup efforts throughout Lincoln County.

The Keep Nebraska Beautiful organization presented the Great American Cleanup Award at their state awards luncheon in Lincoln.

The award was given due to 2,400 volunteers who put in more than 5,000 hours cleaning up litter from Lincoln County.

A total of nine tons of litter has been cleaned up through volunteer efforts in Lincoln County over the past year.

The partnership between KNPLCB and the Platte River Scuba Divers and their cleanup above and below the water at the Hershey Lake was highlighted as part of the award. The result of the cleanup is that litter is out of the waterways and pollution in the lake has been minimized.

The prevention of additional items blowing into the lake has a large effect on the health of the water and the habitat.

“Our goal is to stop litter before it reaches our waterways,” said Mona Anderson, Executive Director of KNPLCB. “Plastic debris injures and kills fish, seabirds at marine mammals. The impacts include fatalities as a result of ingestion, starvation, suffocation, infection, drowning, and entanglement. This is upsetting to our ecosystem, which sustains all life. “

The task of cleaning up litter has far reaching results. All of these forever impact the ecosystem in which we depend on for life, Anderson said. Prevention is key to keeping our communities, lakes and rivers, clean, green and beautiful.
