Doug Haney waived his right to a preliminary hearing Thursday on charges of boating under the influence and child abuse.

Haney 53, was arrested June 12 in the injury of his granddaughter. He was driving his boat at a high rate of speed at Lake Maloney while pulling two girls behind on a flotation device, the sheriff’s office said.

According to the sheriff, Haney made a sharp turn near some rip-rap on the shore and the girls were thrown into the rocks, sending one of them to the hospital in North Platte with serious injuries. She was transferred to Kearney and then on to Omaha for treatment.

The second girl sustained minor injuries.

Haney and the boat left the scene, but were found later at the Frontier resort at the lake. The sheriff’s office said Haney was intoxicated but refused to take a field sobriety test.

He is charged with two counts of felony child abuse.

Turnbull bound the case over to district court.

Haney is free on bond, after paying the required 10% of $100,000.
