Phil Dixon, a lifelong Kansas City resident, loves to talk about the Monarchs, an all black baseball team from 1920-65. The team played in a wide area, including North Platte.

Dixon grew up around players with the Kansas City Monarchs. Over the years, he has learned as much as possible about them, and presents information from data he researched, blending stories and poetry too.

Born in the ‘50s, Dixon had an interest in the team for as long as he can remember. The Monarchs included such greats as Satchel Paige, Jackie Robinson, Ernie Banks, Elston Howard and Frank Robinson.

Dixon will bring his program to the Lincoln County Historical Museum on Tuesday, July 18, at 7 p.m. There is no admission charge.

In some cities, the Monarchs competed against local teams; in others, they battled Negro League teams or major league all-star teams and players -- a history that is unknown to most people.

Games were generally against white players and teams.

People who attend this presentation will hear stories about folks nationwide plus some who once lived in North Platte, perhaps a relative or a neighbor.

This is the kind of relevant local history Dixon combines, with the history of African-American baseball in his presentation, which is called Hometown.

Dixon’s program is a unique blend of sports and the arts, Museum Director Jim Griffin said.

The Lincoln County Historical Museum is at 2403 N. Buffalo Bill Ave. in North Platte
